Rachel Kutumela, a female police officer stationed at the Sewabarwana police station in Bochum, Limpopo, has been arrested at her workplace on serious charges.
She faces six counts of murder and insurance fraud, with total amount involved reaching an astonishing R10 million.
Kutumela made brief appearance in Polokwane Magistrate’s Court, on Friday where her case was postponed to 18 October for bail application.
The 43-year-old Sergeant was taken into custody on Thursday morning just as she was preparing to begin her shift.
National police spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe confirmed the arrest, stating that Kutumela is accused of orchestrating the murders of six individuals from her community to benefit from insurance policies she had taken out on them.
“This betrayal is particularly heartbreaking, as victims had placed their trust in a law enforcement officer, only to fall victim to the very person who was supposed to protect them.”
The shocking nature of this arrest has reverberated throughout Sewabarwana community, leaving many residents grappling with disbelief and confusion.
How could someone sworn to uphold the law engage in such despicable acts?
This incident follows closely on the heels of the conviction of former policewoman Rosemary Ndlovu, who received six life sentences for similar offenses involving insurance fraud and murder, further deepening the community’s sense of betrayal and concern for their safety.
