President Cyril Ramaphosa closed the 2025 G20 Leaders’ Summit on Sunday by declaring unanimous support for Africa-centered climate financing and debt relief frameworks, capping the bloc’s first meeting on African soil.
The summit’s final declaration pledged enhanced aid to developing nations battling climate disasters and unsustainable borrowing costs while endorsing a cooperative critical minerals strategy to accelerate green transitions.
Key outcomes included a G20 vow to “scale up quality and quantity” of climate finance to low- and middle-income countries, strengthen multilateral development banks, and back initiatives like the Just Energy Transition Partnership.
Leaders committed to reducing greenhouse emissions through “deep, rapid cuts” but emphasized energy security and affordability for emerging economies.
Ramaphosa highlighted Africa’s “21st-century prosperity potential” as central to the agenda, building on prior G20 presidencies in Indonesia, India, and Brazil.
The summit advanced South Africa’s High-Level Voluntary Principles for Disaster Risk Reduction, urging global investment in climate resilience amid rising weather-related crises.
Debt relief emerged as a priority, with the bloc acknowledging unsustainable burdens as a barrier to UN Sustainable Development Goals. The declaration called for a “virtuous cycle” of reduced sovereign debt, increased public investment, and inclusive growth—though specific binding targets were omitted.
