Motanyana Masukela, a 51-year-old G4S security guard, was arrested Tuesday at the Mangaung Correctional Centre. He was brought before Bloemfontein Magistrate’s Court on Thursday.
This makes it the fifth suspect to be charged in the case after Thabo Bester’s escape from lawful custody in May last year.
Masukela charged with aiding and abetting Bester to escape from prison and defeating justice will join Dr. Nandipha Magudumana and her fellow defendants in the dock on May 3.
Masukela is expected to apply for bail, which the state opposes.
Magudumana first appeared in the Bloemfontein Magistrates Court on Monday afternoon. She was appearing in connection with the prison break of her lover, convicted murderer and rapist, Thabo Bester.
Magudumana appeared alongside her father, Zolile Sekeleni, and their fellow accused – former G4S employees Sehone Matsoara and Teboho Lipholo – all charged with helping Bester escape from prison.
Sekeleni was granted bail of R10,000 while the others were held in jail until their bail hearings on 3 and 4 May.
Magudumana is facing serious charges, including defeating justice, fraud, violating corpses, and murder.
Magudumana and Bester, two infamous lovers were arrested in Tanzania last Friday, apparently fleeing to Kenya, hoping to escape justice.
Bester’s hearing is set for May 16, and he is still in custody.
