GNU talks: DA prioritises collaboration, ANC cites presidential prerogative

The Democratic Alliance’s (DA) proposal for cabinet distribution in the Government of National Unity (GNU) has sparked a heated debate with the African National Congress (ANC).

The DA’s plan allocates cabinet posts based on each party’s electoral size, aiming to reflect the will of the people and promote inclusivity.

The ANC has expressed reservations, citing the President Cyril Ramaphosa’s final say in appointing the cabinet.

However, the DA remains committed to its proposal, which prioritizes collaboration and unity in governance.

Key requirements include the appointment of a Deputy President, representation across all cabinet clusters, and a say in the selection of Directors General.

In a letter to ANC Secretary General, Fikile Mbalula, DA Federal Chairperson of the Federal Council, Helen Zille emphasised the importance of power-sharing and respecting the ANC’s mandate.

But the ANC has pushed back, warning against dishonestly negotiating cabinet positions through the media.

They argue that the GNU establishment should not be controlled by one party and that leaked ultimatums demonstrate a “loss of trust.”

Despite the tensions, the DA remains committed to its proposal, seeking to ensure the will of the people is reflected in the cabinet.

The party prioritises the interests of all citizens and seeks to work collaboratively with other stakeholders.
