Grief and anguish as missing 3-year-old found dead in pit-latrine

A three-year-old boy went missing on Sunday morning, sparking a frenzied search that ended in anguish and sorrow when his body was discovered and retrieved from a pit latrine.

A gruesome discovery was made on Monday in the yard at the boy’s home in Tshino Nditwanin village under Vuwani Policing area in Vhembe District.

The Limpopo Police Spokesperson, Colonel Malesela Ledwaba, said based on information provided by the family the boy was last seen alive by his uncle between 7:30 and 8:30 on Sunday morning.

According to Col Ledwaba, the little boy’s disappearance led to the parents reporting the matter to police.

A frantic search was conducted by the Search and Rescue Unit assisted by the K9 Search Rescue Team, the Provincial Search and Rescue Unit, and the Emergency Medical Services.

Col Ledwaba stated that the search was centred within the victim’s yard after a K9 had reacted to the vicinity of the pit toilet.

“After conducting tests to determine what might be inside the pit toilet, the members began digging. The body was found and handed over to the local police,” said Col Ledwaba.

The Limpopo Police Commissioner, Lieutenant General Hadebe, praised the team for their dedication to finding the body.

“These kinds of incidents can only be prevented if parents exercise extra caution and care,” Lt Gen Hadebe said,
