Guard killer’s murder case postponed

Update: The 39-year-old security guard, Meluzu Andison Khumalo appeared in the Phalala Magistrate’s Court on April 1, 2021 charged with murder, robbery and illegal possession of firearms and ammunition.

Khumalo was not asked to plead and his case was postponed for the second time to April 22, 2021 for further police investigations.

He was remanded into custody.

 

The suspect was arrested at Onverwacht suburb in Lephalale following the murder of a 40-year-old security guard Matshembe Maphambanyene on March 19, 2021.

During the arrest, police confiscated two illegal firearms and 15 live ammunition.

Limpopo police spokesman Brigadier Motlafela Mojapelo said police preliminary investigations had revealed that the guns belonged to the company where both the deceased and suspect were employed, adding that one of the firearms could have been used to shoot and kill his colleague.

“The victim and the suspect were on night duty at the Tomburke weighbridge along the N11 road near the Groblersbrug border post when the incident occurred.

The next morning, when other security guards to report for work to relief the pair, they were shocked to find the body of one of their colleagues lying in the guard room. His service pistol was missing and his colleague was nowhere to be found,” Brigadier Mojapelo said.
