Health MEC fears complacency could trigger third wave coronavirus pandemic

Limpopo’s health department has made an impassioned plea to community members to adhere to COVID-19 regulations as the Easter weekend approach.

In a statement on Monday, Limpopo Health MEC Dr. Phophi Ramathuba has called on those attending meetings allowed under Alert Level 1 to take precautionary measures against the COVID-19 pandemic.

Ramathuba warned people to be cautious, saying the COVID-19 pandemic is still very much present.

“People are now relaxed as if Alert Level 1 is synonymous with viruses. Epidemiologists have warned us against the third wave. The time to be more careful is now because it can become disastrous considering that the third wave could visit us sooner, even that we could have completed Phase 1 vaccine, “warned Dr. Ramathuba.

Ramathuba said the expected third wave will be disastrous if the current complacency continues.

“This complacency that we are seeing at parties, weddings, funerals, and other gatherings on the weekends is leading us into dangerous ground,” said Dr. Ramathuba.

“Guided by the lessons we learned from the holiday seasons, we have reason to worry regarding the upcoming Easter weekend and school holidays.

The COVID-19 has not gone away, it is still virulent,” added the MEC.
