Honda launches WR-V to expand SUV compact segment

To expand its presence in the popular compact sports car (SUV) segment, Honda Motor South Africa launched its brand-new WR-V.

The automaker describes the compact segment as an attractive addition to its South African product line, based on an established and valued brand pedigree in the SUV market.

The new WR-V takes inspiration from its two best-selling siblings, Jazz, and BR-V, and exudes a modern and attractive personality that is sure to be a formula for success.

From bold exterior designs to airy and practical interiors, the WR-V is a premium SUV that offers consumers a combination of style, functionality, and flexibility.

The WR-V technology also offers a multitude of safety, comfort, and connectivity functions in the two models which makes driving very comfortable.

Yushi Fukuda, President of Honda Motor South Africa, said the WR-V is making its debut in the entry-level SUV, the fastest growing and most competitive segment in the market.

“The entry-level SUV segment, which accounts for 18% of South Africa’s new passenger car market, comprises over 50,000 units per year and is showing a staggering 39% annual growth through the end of 2019.

“We seek to increase our presence in this very important sector through a growing selection of exciting new SUV models in which the WR-V will play an important new role.”

The WR-V keeps all of Honda’s proven qualities in terms of unmatched quality, durability, and reliability while attracting a new group of customers in the compact SUV category,”said Fukuda.

Dinesh Govender, GM Honda Automobiles and Corporate added: “Within our existing reach, the WR-V is below the HR-V and next to the BR-V and will be our cheapest 5-seat compact SUV to date.

This car retains all the coveted features of the Honda brand, including innovation, quality touch, reassuring safety, and a comfortable and complete driving experience, and promises to rock the SUV segment in South Africa. “”

The exterior design of the new WR-V shows a compact yet confident appearance that sets it apart from other mass-market offerings uniquely.

Despite being recognized as a member of the Honda family, the new WR-V has the bold signature, distinctive styling, and sporty, agile look combined with the tough toughness and rugged appeal of an SUV.

The front finish has characteristics of an expressive and bold headlamp design, complemented by the LED daytime running lights that form the striking face of Honda’s wing.

Clear shift lines, clean contours, and emphasized wheel arches add to a beginner’s presence when turning the head.

The carmaker equips elegance with an LED projector lamp and LED fog lamp on top of the halogen projector and comfortable fog lamp, both elegant, precise, and functional.

The short and wide hood angles blend with the large windshield paddle, while the thin A-pillars reinforce the sleek aerodynamic lines of the front design.

The large glass surface creates a spacious and attractive impression that emphasizes the spaciousness of the cabin and at the same time ensures that front and rear passengers enjoy a great view.

Besides, large windows on a quarter from either side ensure an unobstructed view of the cockpit.

The tidy rear is dominated by a large cluster of C-shaped LED taillights, a rear door that opens up to the bumper level for easy loading, and a rear fascia in contrasting charcoal and alloys to accentuate the WR-capable character.

The WR-V’s raised shape and wide chain reflect an SUV-like feel, while the distinctive 16-inch alloy wheels and sleek roof rails add a touch of elegance.

Despite its compact footprint, the WR-V looks and feels spacious inside.

The interior design focuses on smart packaging to provide spacious front and rear cabins that can comfortably accommodate five passengers.

The WRVV also doesn’t compromise on luggage capacity, offering a capacity of 363 liters with the rear seats raised and an impressive 881 liters with the rear seats folded down.

Better yet, the WR-V also includes Honda’s ingenious “Magic Seat” system, borrowed from the popular Honda Jazz and HR-V. The magic chair can be configured in many ways to accommodate objects of different sizes and lengths.

In high mode, the Magic Chair makes it easy to place objects upright and leaves more than 1.2 meters of floor-to-roof space. In this configuration, two mountain bikes with the front wheels removed can be transported in an upright position at the same time. In long mode, objects such as ladders and surfboards up to 2.4 meters long can be easily transported by folding the rear seats and front passenger seats.

The interior of the WR-V is attractive and offers many comfort and convenience features that make every work trip enjoyable and easy.

The upholstery is made of high-quality black fabric and offers the perfect balance of comfort, support, and durability.

Charcoal soft accents accentuate the luxurious feel of the cabin, while silver accents add an atmosphere of extra sophistication.

Both models have a three-spoke multifunction steering wheel and audio controls. Elegance models have leather covers for the gear knob and steering wheel, which continue the elegant interior theme.

The newcomer’s instrument panel is intuitive and ergonomic and features three clear, round dials with blue backlighting. Both models have an automatic air conditioning system with intuitive touch panel controls and electric windows on the front and rear.

The infotainment system features an easy-to-use 5-inch LCD audio system with Bluetooth connectivity for cordless phones and audio streaming, USB connectivity, and four speakers.

The Elegance model has a 7-inch audio system that integrates neatly into the touch screen, including Apple CarPlay and Android Auto functions.

This intuitive system allows the driver to have complete smartphone functionality, including app-based navigation, audio streaming, and more.

Apart from that, Elegance receives an upgraded system with 6 speakers.

Both models use a rear parking sensor, while the Elegance has an integrated rear camera, which provides added comfort when the car enters and exits tight spaces.

Customers will appreciate the other additional features of the Elegance model, such as Cruise control and intelligent keyless entry with a start button, with which the driver can easily unlock, enter and start the car with the key chain still in his pocket.

Fuel savings are becoming increasingly important for many consumers in the entry-level vehicle market.

Therefore, the All-New Honda WR-V is powered by a sophisticated and reliable 1.2-liter four-cylinder petrol engine that uses Honda’s smart i-VTEC valve control system, ensuring optimal balance between power and fuel efficiency.

The maximum power output is 66 kW and is reached at 6,000 rpm, combined with a maximum torque of 110 Nm at 4,800 rpm.

Both models are equipped with a fast shift five-speed manual transmission and achieve a combined fuel cycle of just 6.4 liters / 100 km.

Under the skin, a very rigid structure made of large amounts of high-strength steel creates a solid platform for independent adjustment of the MacPherson-based front suspension and rear torsion bar.

The chassis offers safe handling and demanding ride, while electric power steering ensures smooth and clear steering behavior.

As expected by Honda, the WR-V comes with a variety of safety features, including six SRS airbags – including two front airbags, side collisions, and side blinds – for the Comfort and Elegance models.

Other features include front seat belt fasteners, ISOFIX child seat anchors, and an electronic brake distribution system (ABS) with electronic brake-force distribution (EBD) that allows safer and more efficient driving in an emergency.

Stops and navigation in poor road conditions.

The WR-V features an Advanced Compatibility Engineering (ACE) body design that allows collision energy to be evenly distributed and directed away from the passenger compartment while minimizing damage to other affected vehicles.

The Honda WR-V lineup consists of two models, Comfort and Elegance, both of which use the same 1.2-liter drivetrain and five-speed manual transmission.

The new WR-V color spectrum includes new platinum whites (pearls), bright reds (metal), moon silver (metals), and modern steels.

The colour line-up for the new WR-V includes a new Platinum White (Pearl), Radiant Red (Metallic), Lunar Silver (Metallic) and Modern Steel (Metallic).

The new Honda WR-V comes standard with Honda’s five-year/200 000km warranty, backed by a four-year/60 000km service plan as standard with service intervals every 15 000km. Three-year AA Roadside Assistance service is also included in the purchase price.
