A man suspected of having been a Zimbabwean national and the third intruder at an off-duty policeman’s home was shot during a robbery and later died in a hospital, police said on Tuesday.
Limpopo Police spokesperson Colonel Malesela Ledwaba said a police sergeant attached to Mutale police station was attacked by robbers at his home in Lukau Tshisheve village, Limpopo early on Sunday morning at about 1:30 am.
According to the police, the drama unfolded after a loud bang on the front door, followed by three people breaking into a bedroom, where one of them wielded a firearm.
“The suspects took the victim’s money and cell phones, before ransacking the room and taking some clothes, footwear, lady’s handbags, and a leather wallet with bank cards,” said Col Ledwaba.
The suspect, who was carrying a firearm, shot the policeman in his shoulder, and while another one dragged the policeman’s wife to nearby bushes.
“The policeman crawled back inside the house and retrieved his service pistol.
He fired a shot at the suspect left behind in the room, while others had already fled the scene,” said Col Ledwaba.
A man with injuries was found lying in bushes near the scene of a crime. It is thought that he is a Zimbabwean national and one of the robbers.
Police also discovered stolen goods in his possession.
Col Ledwaba said the wounded suspect was rushed to hospital and later succumbed due to gunshot wounds.
“An inquest docket has been opened for further investigations,” he added.
Cl Ledwaba said wife later returned, adding that investigations are unfolding on what could have happened to her.
Police said they were looking for two more suspects. They appealed to anyone who might have information about the suspects to contact either the nearest police station or call the toll-free number 0860610111 or Mysapapp.
