‘Illegal hunter’ shot dead, farmworker is facing a murder charge 

An alleged illegal hunter, Matlhatsi Edwin Thutlwa (30) of Kauletsi village in Ga-Seleka was shot and killed at Grootpan farm, Beska in Lephalale.

Limpopo Police Spokesperson, Brigadier Motlafela Mojapelo confirmed the farmworker, Barend Steyn (32) appeared in the Lephalale Magistrate’s Court on April 28, facing a murder charge.

Steyn is out on R5000 bail and the court postponed the case to July 3, 2020, for further investigations.

Brigadier Mojapelo said cops seized the murder weapon used during the shooting incident which occurred on April, 26.

“Nature Conservation members were alerted to the scene by gunshots,” said Brigadier Mojapelo.

According to police spokesperson, Nature Conservation members found the trio with two bags containing wild animal meat, one gemsbok, and hunting tools.

“As they escorted them towards a van, the men fled into different directions and disappeared into the bushes.

The police and medical emergency services certified Thutlwa dead when they arrived at the scene.

“It is not clear at this stage what led to the murder, but investigations are still continuing,” added Mojapelo.
