In a fit of rage uncle ‘swings garden spade at niece’, hits and kills baby boy

A 38-year-old uncle was arrested on Sunday for the alleged murder of a five-month-old baby boy during a fierce argument with his niece, the mother of the dead infant at Extension 4, Kgakala Township in Leeudoringstad, North West.

“In a fit of rage, uncle then went outside and came back with a garden spade and attempted to assault his niece. But he ended up hitting the infant baby boy whom his mother was carrying on her back,” according to North West Provincial Police spokesperson, Lieutenant Colonel Amanda Funani.

She said the little boy was taken to a local clinic where he was transported to Wolmaransstad Hospital.

Lt Col Funani said the infant was ultimately taken to Tshepong Hospital where he died due to head injuries.

.The suspect is expected to appear in the Leeudoringstad Magistrates’ Court on [today] Tuesday, facing a murder charge.

The North West Police Commissioner Sello Kwena condemned the incident and applauded the police for their swift reaction that led to the arrest of the suspected perpetrator.

The commissioner reiterated that the police would continue to fight crime with all its might.
