The Volvo XC90 will arrive in South Africa in 2022 with the new mild-hybrid petrol engine, capable of delivering higher fuel efficiency and smoother driving.
The new XC90 B5 will replace the current XC90 T5, while the new XC90 T6 will replace the current XC90 T6. In addition to the two new models, Volvo is introducing the XC90 T8 Twin Engine plug-in hybrid.
Both newcomers feature mild-hybrid petrol engines while having a Kinetic Energy Recovery System (KERS), which recovers brake energy and converts it into a 48V battery charge. Integrated starter generators use this energy to support combustion engines.
Volvo Car South Africa’s Managing Director, Greg Maruszewski, said the new engines had many advantages.
“Fuel efficiency is higher, and emissions are lower. Besides providing exceptional performance on start-up and takeoff, the 48-volt battery also enhances the vehicle’s fuel economy. The vehicle does not need to be charged at an electrical outlet as there are no cables.” Maruszewski explained.
Volvo’s 2018 XC90 will feature stop/start technology and an eight-speed Geartronic transmission with shift-by-wire.
This technology enables drivers to control the transmission electrically, resulting in an improved driving experience (a luxury touch is the new handcrafted crystal gearshift).
There hasn’t been much change in the exterior appearance of the Volvo XC90 (rather, an evolutionary approach with minor adjustments to the design language has been used), but there are new and updated features on the inside.
For example, there’s a new CleanZone technology that drastically improves the air quality inside the vehicle. This world-first premium air quality technology includes an inside-cabin sensor that detects PM 2.5 levels.
CleanZone cleans the interior of the car and eliminates microscopic particles (100 times smaller than human hair) that would otherwise be inhaled by the driver. It’s also possible to pre-clean the XC90 using the Volvo app before getting in.
In response to consumer demand, the basic yet extremely useful parking ticket holder has been reinstated.
In addition, several options have been simplified to avoid client misunderstanding.
Maruszewski said the 2018 XC90 is a significant step forward for the vehicle currently the apex of the Volvo lineup.
“It embodies the basic traits we are incorporating into all our vehicles, not least clean and more efficient power-trains. We’re excited to offer these to our consumers while maintaining the luxury, performance, design, connectivity, and innovative technology that have helped us grow as a company,” he says.
