Is President Ramaphosa fit to steer SA out of darkness? DA Says No

Democratic Alliance (DA) has unleashed a barrage of criticism against President Cyril Ramaphosa, accusing him of failing to provide clear-cut leadership in the energy sector.

DA says the country now finds itself in the bizarre predicament of having two ministers, Kgosientsho Ramokgopa and Gwede Mantashe in charge of the Electricity Regulation Act.

Despite Ramaphosa’s recent proclamation transferring powers to Ramokgopa, the DA’s Shadow Minister of Electricity, Samantha Graham-Maré, says her party fears that this will only exacerbate the crisis and lead to mixed messaging.

She questions who Ramokgopa will be accountable to now that he holds such significant executive powers, and whether he will be shielded from parliamentary accountability.

Graham-Maré said if Ramaphosa fails to address the confusion, it remains unclear who will ultimately be responsible for important policies and initiatives in the energy sector.
