Within three months of its local debut, the Kia Sonet has cemented its status as one of South Africa’s most popular small SUVs.
With its eye-catching design, dynamic driving characteristics, spacious interior and wealth of standard features, the mid-spec Sonet EX models are the best-selling mid-spec cars in the Sonet series, while two entry-level LX derivatives operate on an even more cost-effective basis.
The luxury of choice
But don’t let entry-level placements fool you. Sonet LX variants come with Kia’s 2.5 MPI naturally aspirated petrol engine, which produces 85 kW at 6,300 r/min and 144 Nm of torque at 4,500 r/min, same as its EX sibling.
Customers have the option of selecting either a 6-speed manual gearbox or a continuously variable transmission (CVT).
Features that stand out in the entry-level LX variants include:
- 8,0-inch HD touchscreen infotainment with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto
- Remote central locking
- Front and rear electric windows
- Electric mirrors
- 6 speakers
- 15-inch steel wheels
- Height-adjustable driver’s seat
- Automatic headlamp activation
- Rear-view camera
- Combination artificial leather and cloth seat trim
Safety first, always
A top priority at Kia is the safety of its customers, starting with the structural integrity of the passenger cabin. Over two-thirds of the Sonet’s body is made from high-strength and advanced high-strength steel, resulting in a lightweight but robust structure.

Something for everyone
“Our Sonet SUV has become one of South Africa’s top selling models, and we’re delighted that so many people are starting their SUV journeys with this newest model,” says Stephen Crosse, Kia South Africa Sales and Marketing Director.
Crosse said there is nothing ‘entry-level’ about the Sonet LX derivatives when it comes to comfort, convenience and features.
“We’re confident that the LX’s value proposition will further bolster the Sonet’s popularity, “added Crosse.
