Knife-wielding Vaalwater serial rapist finally arrested after a decade-long manhunt

A decade after being sought in relation to a raping spree in a remote Vaalwater town outside Modimolle, Limpopo, a serial rapist was finally arrested.

Limpopo police spokesperson, Colonel Malesela Ledwaba said the 59-year-old suspect was arrested by detectives from the Modimolle Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) Unit on Tuesday, at the Fochville Magistrate’s Court in North West.

He was appearing in court on a rape charge .

Col Ledwaba said the suspect is beleived to be linked to three separate rape cases between 2013 and 2017.

It is alleged he raped women aged 17 to 43 in the Vaalwater area.

“The suspect targeted victims near shopping centres and attacked them while they walked through the bushes, threatening them with a knife or strangling them,” according to Col Ledwaba.

Colonel Ledwaba said forensic evidence positively linked the suspect to the cases.

He appeared in the Modimolle Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday facing charges of rape.

According to Col Ledwaba, the police are continuing their investigation into the matter.

Police Commissioner Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe commended Detectives from Modimolle FCS Unit for their meticulous investigation that led to the arrest of the suspect

“We would like to thank this investigating team for their excellent investigation, and we will continue to do our utmost to ensure that cases of gender-based violence are prioritised,” said Lt Gen Thembi Hadebe.

Col Ledwaba said police investigations are continuing
