The original Land Cruiser, dubbed Toyota BJ at the time and designed for military use, hit the roads 70 years ago.
This four-wheel-drive juggernaut immediately gained a reputation for its tough construction and ability to go everywhere.
In 1954, the Land Cruiser name was coined as the car entered the civilian market and competed against the British-built Land Rover.
To highlight the company’s 70th anniversary, Toyota SA is pleased to announce the launch of a 70th Anniversary edition. The special edition vehicle will be available in single and double cab versions of the 79-series.
According to the carmaker, the number 70 also evokes the long-running Land Cruiser 70-series, which includes the 76 Station Wagon, 78 Wagon, and 79 “bakkie” or LCV.
The special edition model draws on the Land Cruiser’s basic strengths and adds a slew of utility-enhancing parts and aesthetic modifications to create a one-of-a-kind model tailored to the needs of “hardcore” Land Cruiser fans.
The outside features a distinctive 70-year symbol, which is also included on the durable cotton canvas seat coverings, making the 70th edition clearly recognisable.
To create a signature style, Toyota lettering has replaced the Toyota ellipse, comparable to the Hilux GR-S and Land Cruiser GR-S.
The custom Land Cruiser insignia, reminiscent of the legendary 40-series, which the celebratory model proudly wears on its side doors, is another nostalgic touch.
In addition, the remaining features of the package are designed to provide the vehicle with features that do not only look good, but perform well when the going gets tough. Due to a heavy-duty steel bumper, an integrated winch, and a towbar, the LC 70th anniversary variant is equipped to handle any job.
The following is a list of the individual specification improvements:
Interior features include unique grey seat covers with 70th edition embroidery, Land Cruiser branded floor mats, and a touchscreen sound system with navigation and Bluetooth.
Exterior features include a heritage-inspired mesh radiator grille with TOYOTA lettering, a heritage badge on the side door, a 70th Anniversary insignia, a tubular rear step bumper with removable towbar, an inner load-bed protector, a rubberized load bed (3mm), and an integrated winch preparation.
The 70th Anniversary model will be available exclusively in ivory white and sand beige.
