Lephalale rapist sentenced to life in prison

A Limpopo man who raped a 30-year-old woman was this week sentenced to life imprisonment by the Lephalale Regional Court.

The woman was walking home alone in Marapong Extension 2. at around 11:30 on May 5, 2018, when the incident occurred.

The court also heard during the trial how the assailant, Sekurufi Abram Mogobu, 40 threatened the woman with a knife, and then struck her with an unknown object.

The accused then grabbed and pulled her into a nearby empty house.

When the woman screamed for help, the man threatened to kill her and then raped her. Before fleeing the scene, he robbed her of money and her cellphone.

Community members helped the heavily shaken victim and called the police.

The spokesperson for the Limpopo Police, Brigadier Motlafela Mojapelo, confirmed Lephalale police station opened a rape and assault case investigated by the Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offenses Unit.

He said the case was assigned to Detective Sergeant Kwena Jan Ramahuta.

An investigation by the Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offenses Unit led to the arrest of the accused in December of the same year.

Analyzing DNA samples, the court was satisfied the man was positively linked to the accused who assaulted and raped the victim.
