The Democratic Alliance (DA) has accused the Limpopo Health Department of serious negligence following an oversight visit to George Masebe Hospital in Bakenberg near Mokopane.
Limpopo Legislature DA health spokesperson, Risham Maharaj described the situation as dire and even life-saving equipments are not functioning.
In a statement on Tuesday, DA said the hospital is inoperable and unable to provide public health services.
Even the closest clinic in the Old Post Office Building didn’t have enough space.
“The health department needs to prioritise abandoned and shabby hospital buildings to make sure that people receive adequate health services,” Maharaj said.
Maharaj says mortuary is in terrible condition and fridges are not working.
“The hospital has 4 ambulances, and are not functioning, all of which have covered a distance of over 250,000 km, sometimes over 500,000 km, and are not well maintained.”
As a result, said Maharaj the Bakenberg hospital borrow an ambulance from Mokopane.
Maharaj claims that his staff are disappointed and affected by the neglect of health care in the province.
“This facility has a serious staff shortage with 62% of vacancies. Most of the hospital management are in acting capacity while 5 employees had been suspended for more than 5 months. Hospital clerk also act as mortuary assistant,” said Maharaj.
Maharaj said it is shocking there are still hospitals in the province not ready and lacked the equipments to provide the life-saving services to the public even though the country had moved to level 1.
