A Limpopo doctor allegedly shot his wife, also a medical practitioner, in a suspected act of domestic violence, then turned the gun on himself.
According to authorities, the incident happened on Monday afternoon.
Limpopo police spokesperson, Brigadier Motlafela Mojapelo confirmed, Dr. Mainfred Shikwambane, 35, Donald Frazer Hospital based doctor in Thohoyandou, shot and killed his wife, Tshimangadzo Muofhe, 32, a Polokwane Provincial Hospital doctor, in what is thought to have been a domestic dispute at their home in Thornhill Estate on Monday.
According to reports, said Brigadier Mojapelo a family member who had just arrived from Vembe discovered the bodies and called the police.
Mojopelo said preliminary police investigations revealed that the couple had a quarrel on Monday morning.
“In the afternoon, the woman was shot dead by her husband who then turned the gun on himself.”
He said the motive for the incident is unknown at this stage but domestic violence cannot be ruled out.
Limpopo Police Commissioner, Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe has urged people experiencing domestic challenges to seek assistance and resolve their issues, instead of resorting to taking lives.
Brigadier Mojapelo said police have opened murder and inquest docket.
