Due to multiple generating unit failures over the past 24 hours, Eskom says it regrets to inform the public that Stage 2 loadshedding will be implemented between 5pm this evening until Wednesday at 5am.
Eskom had ealier announced load shedding will trigger at 9pm until 5am on Tuesday morning, adding that power cuts will be repeated at the same time on Tuesday and Wednesday ,
Due to the breakdown of Unit 3 at Medupi, load shedding has been brought forward to 5pm and implemented continuously until 5am on Wednesday.
This loadshedding is required in order for Eskom to replenish the emergency generation reserves, which have been utilised significantly since the past weekend.
As of this morning, said Eskom a unit each at Matla, Kendal, Matimba, Kusile and Grootvlei tripped followed Unit 3 at by Medupi power station, while one unit each at Arnot and Hendrina power plants were forced to shut down. Unit 3.
Along with the other units over the weekend, generation capacity tripped, making Eskom more dependent on emergency generation reserve to get it up and running.
“Total breakdowns amount to 15 228 MW while planned maintenance is 6 307MW of capacity as we continue with the reliability maintenance.
While we expect some generation units to return to service over the next 24 hours, Eskom appeals to all South Africans to help us limit the impact of load shedding by reducing the usage of electricity and to switch off all non-essential items,” added Eskom.
