BMW M GmbH has added a highly special model to its line-up of high-performance sports vehicles in the premium midsize market, with the introduction of a third body type.
From the fourth quarter of 2021, the new BMW M4 Competition Convertible with M xDrive will be available in South Africa.
The next series of top-class high-performance sports cars for the premium midsize segment now includes a third body variant:
BMW M4 Competition Convertible with M xDrive: 375 kW, 3.7 second 0–100 km/h acceleration, 10.2 l/100 km combined fuel economy, 233–231 g/km CO2 emissions.
As an open-top high-performance sports vehicle with all-wheel drive, the BMW M4 Competition Convertible with M xDrive sets the new ground for M. Exclusive driving enjoyment and breathtaking performance combine to create a compelling combination.
Dynamism, agility, and precision are paired with uncompromising everyday utility and long-distance capabilities in the classic M formula.
With the roof down, unrestricted access to the sun and oncoming wind, as well as direct immersion in the engine’s soundscape, offer a performance experience unlike any other.
Clear forms, a dynamically stretched silhouette, and a revolutionary soft-top concept combine to create an emotionally appealing design. The Panel Bow Softtop blends the convenience of a retractable hardtop with the classic elegance of a fabric hood. The soft top is 40% lighter than the previous model’s roof, and the boot capacity is 80 litres bigger.
Thanks to its electric drive mechanism, the soft top can be opened or closed in 18 seconds, even while driving.
The outward characteristics that distinguish an M automobile play an important role in meeting the demands of a high-performance sports car: Massive M-specific BMW kidney grille, large cooling air intakes for the engine and brakes, aggressively sculpted wheel arches, and unmistakable M Side Gills.
Two pairs of tailpipes in the exhaust system are merged into an M-specific diffuser. A black ribbon encircles the body, formed by prominently expanded side sills and attachment pieces for the front and rear aprons. Optional M Carbon exterior package and BMW M Performance Parts are available.
Six-cylinder in-line engine with M TwinPower Turbo technology, high-revving nature, and a 44-kW boost in maximum output over the previous generation.
Two turbochargers, improved direct-injection technology, and components based on racing experience.
Performance specifications of the Hallmark M, with a peak torque of 650 Nm. Extremely dynamic cooling and oil supply systems are designed.
Electrically regulated flaps in the exhaust system provide an emotionally rich tone.
An eight-speed M Steptronic gearbox with Drivelogic channels the power. Three shift programs, an M-specific selector lever, and gearshift paddles on the steering wheel.
The Active M Differential and M xDrive all-wheel-drive system improve traction, directional stability, and dynamism.
Rear-biased layout with three driving modes to choose from: 4WD, 4WD Sport, and 2WD for the pure rear-wheel drive without the traction control system.
Model-specific chassis setup: five-link rear axle with specially adjusted kinematics and elastokinematics, double-joint spring strut front axle with customized axle geometry and steering ratio.
M Servotronic steering with the variable ratio is standard, as is adaptive M suspension with electronically controlled dampers. Integrated brake mechanism with two pedal feel and responsiveness options. M Compound brakes come standard, and M Carbon ceramic brakes are available as an upgrade.
As standard, the M light-alloy wheels are forged and measure 19 inches in front and 20 inches in back.
M Dynamic Mode is part of the Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) system. As a result of integrated wheel slip control, responses are extremely quick and precise.
M Traction Control with ten-stage wheel slip limitation adjustment, M Drift Analyser, and M Laptimer are optional M Drive Professional features.
Due to a comprehensive package of bracing features aimed at improving driving dynamics, including a front axle subframe with an aluminium sheer panel and a rear axle subframe with a rigid link to the body, the body structure and chassis mountings have outstanding torsional stiffness. For this model, a set of torsion struts has been added to the back of the body.
M-specific displays and controls in an ergonomically optimized sports vehicle cockpit.
M Sport seats with Extended Merino leather upholstery are standard, with seat ventilation available as an option. As an option, M Carbon bucket seats with a structure-based design are offered.
Setup button for immediate access to the settings for the engine, chassis, steering, braking system, and M xDrive. M-specific control/operation concept featuring a Setup button for immediate access to the settings for the engine, chassis, steering, braking system, and M xDrive.
The M buttons on the steering wheel can call up two separately composed alternatives of the overall arrangement.
ROAD and SPORT modes are included by default; TRACK mode is added when M Drive Professional is selected.
A wide range of driver assistance devices is available to improve long-distance comfort and safety.
Parking Assistant with Reversing Assistant and Driving Assistant Professional (containing Steering and Lane Control Assistant, Active Navigation feature, and Emergency Lane Assistant) are also available as options.
BMW Live Cockpit Professional with fully digital display grouping, cloud-based navigation system BMW Maps, and BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant are all standard features, as well as three-zone automatic climate control, ambient lighting, and a hi-fi speaker system.
