A Mozambican national, Joao Antonio Lucas, arrested for a house robbery at Lephalale Local Municipality Mayor, Jack Maeko’s private residence at Moong, Ga-Seleka in Limpopo, will also appear in several KwaZulu-Natal courts facing similar charges, it emerged in court.
In a statement on Thursday, Limpopo Police Spokesperson, Colonel Moatshe Ngoepe, would not reveal the details, saying Lucas will face similar charges.
Lucas appeared alongside Portia Kgama in the Phalala Magistrates’ Court on Thursday on charges of house robbery, theft, and assault.
The court postponed his case to May 31, 2021, while his co-accused Portia Kgama appears on April 21 – both for bail application and further police investigations.
Their court appearance follows a house robbery incident that occurred at the house of one of the Municipal Mayors in the Waterberg District of Limpopo Province on Sunday, February 14, 2021, at about 8 pm.
“Four armed men and two women went to the mayor’s house at his home village in Moong and demanded to see him.
Before the guard manning the gate could respond, the thieves attacked him, then tied everyone up in the house before searching it,” Colonel Ngoepe said.
The robbers stole Toyota Legend 45, and the car was later found abandoned along Lebu road near Tomburke outside Lephalale.
The suspect fled in three cars, a Toyota Fortuner, the VW Polo, and the unidentified car.
During the arrest, one of the cars used by the suspects on the day of the incident, a VW Polo, was confiscated.
Ngoepe said a manhunt for the remaining suspects is still underway.
Police have called on anyone with information that can lead to their arrest to contact Colonel Malesela Mogale at 071 479 2329 or the crime stop number 0860010111 or the nearest Police Station or MySAPSApp.
