Update: The High Court in Bloemfontein has on Wednesday adjourned the corruption case against former Free State Premier Ace Magashule.
Magashule appeared briefly in court, and his pre-trial hearing was rescheduled for October 19.
The currently suspended ANC General Secretary, Magashule, is charged with 74 counts of fraud, corruption, and money laundering.
He is charged along with 15 others, among them former Mangaung mayor Olly Mlamleli.
It’s alleged that Magashule and his cronies profited from an asbestos roofing removal project, a fraudulent contract mainly written to siphon off R255 million from the Human Settlements Department’s treasury for politicians and contractors.
Magashule allegedly failed to alert law enforcement agencies about a corrupt contract.
DA Free State MPL Leona Kleynhans claimed Magashule received at least R1.1 million in direct payments from a contractor, Igor Mpambani, who was later mysteriously murdered.
“DA is confident that the accused will be brought to justice and the allegations will be proven in court. As a final act of justice, leaders will be held accountable for their treachery and deceit, “explained Kleynhans.
