Manamela 23, gets life sentence for raping pensioner, 84, stealing her R70 and SASSA card

Mahwelereng Regional Court in Limpopo on Tuesday sentenced Jackson Manamela, 23, to a lengthy prison term for his heinous crimes of raping an 84-year-old pensioner and robbing her of R70 in cash and her Social Grant Card.

The court heard how, on May 9, 2022, Manamela had accosted the elderly victim at Mellenium village, Mahwelereng, outside Mokopane, stabbing her with a pair of scissors on the forehead and dragging her into a shack.

He then proceeded to rob her of R70 in cash and her Social Grant Card, before committing the heinous act of rape and fleeing the scene.

The victim managed to inform a neighbor of the ordeal, who then called the police.

The case was transferred to the Mokopane Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit for further investigation and  was assigned to Sergeant Ramokone Tinah.

Through her dedication and commitment, she ensured Manamela never received bail after it was discovered that he had been out on bail for housebreaking with the intention to steal and commit robbery on December 2, 2019, targeting the same elderly victim.

On Tuesday, the court handed down a life sentence for rape, 15 years for housebreaking with the intention to rob and commit robbery, and 3 years imprisonment for robbery, all of which would run concurrently.

In addition, Manamela was declared unfit to ever possess a firearm.

The Provincial Police Commissioner, Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe, welcomed the lengthy jail term sentencing meted out to Manamela.
