Glencore PLC has been fined USD1.2 billion for violating the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act and manipulating commodity prices.
The United Democratic Movement, Leader Bantu Holomisa wrote to Busisiwe Mkhwenabe, the Public Protector, to bring the possibility of South Africa being one of the victims to her attention.
Given Brian Molefe’s testimony at the Zondo Commission, Holomisa said that it is quite likely that these practices happened in South Africa, even though the country was not mentioned specifically in the indictment.
“As the creator of the State Capture Report, the Public Protector has unparalleled insight into the matter of state capture and could bring the issue up with the US government with the help of the Zondo Commission’s lead investigators, the Special Investigating Unit, and potentially the National Prosecuting Authority,” said Holomisa.
There is, as Holomisa said, a deeper principle that should be considered should the US government be able to assist us in uncovering corruption of the same nature here on home soil.
