Public Protector, Advocate Busisiwe Mkhwebane is alleged to have spent R67 million from her office budget to bankroll her legal fees.
This amount was revealed in a written response to the DA question by the Parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Justice on May 31, 2022.
Democratic Alliance (DA) Shadow Minister of Justice and Constitutional Development, Advocate Glunnis Breytenbach said it was revealed that the Public Protector has spent R67 122 771 in the 2020 to 2022 financial years to defend reports taken on judicial review and legal costs.
He said amount include R38 878 530 in 2020/21 and R28 244 241 in 2021/22 legal costs relating to her impeachment process.
According to Breytenbach, this money wasted on frivolous endeavors within the Public Protector’s office would have been greatly alleviated, and important matters would have received the attention they deserve.
“Instead of using the Public Protector’s budget as mandated to investigate complaints from the public, it is being wasted on defending Mkhwebane’s incompetence,” added Breytenbach.
