No party will be allowed to hold GNU hostage, ANC warns

The African National Congress (ANC) has warned political parties against using the media to try and dishonestly obtain cabinet positions.

The party came down hard saying it would not stand for the tactics, arguing that negotiating through leaked ultimatums was dishonest and showed a “loss of trust”.

In a statement on Monday ANC said appointing Cabinet was President Cyril Ramaphosa’s prerogative, while adding that the establishment of a Government of National Unity (GNU) should not be “captured by any one party”

The party emphasised the urgent need to establish government in South Africa, as the people require capable leadership to address significant challenges.

The decision to form a Government of National Unity (GNU) was made, in response to clear indications of unity to improve the well-being of South Africans, as seen in the outcomes of the 2024 National and Provincial elections.

The ANC stated that 10 out of the 18 political parties have joined the ANC-led GNU initiative, demonstrating consensus for the seventh administration.

The ANC pledged to collaborate with all participating parties to address important issues in South Africa and improve the quality of life for all residents.
