Last updated on 2022-11-07

Four suspects impersonating government officials were arrested on Sunday on suspicion of scamming unsuspecting contractors for thousands rands in exchange for tenders, police said.

Members of the syndicate, ranging in age from 37 to 61, are expected to appear in the Wolmaransstadt Magistrate’s Court on Monday,

“It is alleged that suspects promised tenders to unsuspecting contractors. The victims would then be required to deposit a certain amount of cash into an account in exchange for a tender, Lt Col Funani said.

A 53-year-old victim was approached by the suspects on Wednesday, November 2, 2022, and promised him a R58 million tender if he paid them R40, 000,” according to Lt Col Funani.

Accordingly, Funani said the victim deposited R20 000-00 and committed to paying the remainder later.

“Police were contacted after the supposed victim arranged a meeting with the suspects. The National Organised Crime Unit, Tactical Response Team (TRT), and Dr Kenneth Kaunda District Detectives responded to the scene and arrested suspects,” said Lt Col Funani.

Lt Col Funani said the suspects would appear in court on Monday.

In a statement, Lieutenant General Sello Kwena, the North West Police Commissioner, congratulated all the units involved for the successful arrest that was made as a result of their collaboration.

Scams like this one should be avoided by members of the community, he warned.
