A foul smell coming from one of the rooms at a building in downtown Johannesburg led to the discovery of six decomposed bodies on Sunday and a 21-year-old man was arrested, police said.
Gauteng Police Spokesperson, Brigadier Brenda Muridili said police were alerted to a gruesome find in the building due to icky smell coming out of one the rooms.
“The police were called to the building due to a foul smell coming out of one of the rooms. That is when a body of a woman was found.,” said Brigadier Muridili
A preliminary investigation led the police to the suspect, believed to be the last person seen with the deceased woman.
“The suspect was seen with the deceased woman on October 2, 2022, at 8 pm. She was never seen again until her body was discovered on Sunday morning. The clothes she was wearing match the description of one of the missing persons reported recently,” said Brigadier Muridili.
After questioning the suspect, Brigadier Muridili said the police went back to the building and found five more bodies outside the building near a makeshift workshop and some rubbish dumpsters.
Regrettably, the other five bodies are nearing the end of their decomposition. Forensic analysis will be performed to identify them, according to Muridili.
He said the suspect will face six counts of murder, and the Provincial Murder and Robbery Unit is investigating the case.
