The Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU) has launched a scathing attack on the parliamentary rascals who are threatening to undermine the very fabric of South Africa’s democracy.
In a blistering statement on Friday, COSATU Parliamentary Coordinator, Matthew Parks, condemned the Democratic Alliance (DA) for its handling of MP Renaldo Gouws, who was found to have promoted racial violence on social media.
Just three months into the Seventh Parliament, and the nation is already witnessing a disturbing trend of misconduct by Members of Parliament. The DA’s appointment of Renaldo Gouws as a spokesperson, despite his questionable character, has sparked outrage.
“This is a slap in the face to South Africans,” said Parks.
The MK Party has also come under fire for purging its parliamentary ranks and unleashing “disreputable characters” implicated in state capture. COSATU has emphasized that society has the right to expect integrity from public representatives.
“The nation deserves better than MPs who prioritize personal gain over public interest,” Parks added.
Furthermore, COSATU has criticized DA leader and Agriculture Minister, John Steenhuisen, for appointing Roman Cabanac, a self-proclaimed Twitter troll, as his Ministerial Chief of Staff. Cabanac’s lack of experience in government, Parliament, or agriculture raises serious concerns.
The appointment of Minister Thembi Simelane, who confirmed receiving a loan from a person facing VBS-related corruption charges, has also raised eyebrows.
COSATU has demanded accountability and transparency from public representatives, emphasizing that Parliament and law enforcement organs need to act when MPs lose their moral bearings.
“The consequences of inaction will be dire,” Parks warned.
“Treating political miscreants with kid gloves will embolden further corruption and looting.”
COSATU has urged citizens to demand accountability from their elected representatives and report any instances of misconduct to the relevant authorities.
As South Africa grapples with the aftermath of state capture and corruption, COSATU’s calls for action resonate strongly.
“ The nation’s democracy is under threat, and it is up to citizens and public representatives to defend it,” added Parks.
