Police arrested “tomatoes trucks drivers” related to cigarette smuggling sydicate

In yet anoth­er ille­gal cig­a­rettes syn­di­cate busts, act­ing on a tip-off from mem­bers of the com­mu­ni­ty,  police had on Wednes­day uncov­ered box­es full of ille­gal cig­a­rettes hid­den into two trucks that were alleged­ly “trans­port­ing” toma­toes.

Limpopo Provin­cial Police spokesper­son Brigadier Mot­lafela Mojape­lo said the police received infor­ma­tion about two trucks trans­port­ing toma­toes from a local farm near Pont­drift bor­der post to Rusten­burg in the north­west also con­tains con­sign­ments of ille­gal cig­a­rettes.

“A snap oper­a­tion com­pris­ing  All­days, Makha­do police includ­ing Crime Intel­li­gence Unit searched the area. Police found a vehi­cle on the R572 Swart­wa­ter road next to the Mogalak­we­na bridge that matched the descrip­tion and ordered the dri­ver to stop.” Brigadier Mojape­lo.

Brigadier Gen­er­al Mohape­lo said they then escort­ed the two dri­vers  to the All­days Police Sta­tion, where they [police] found 30 box­es of Rem­ing­ton Gold and Pacif­ic Blue Ray cig­a­rettes, esti­mat­ed at R403 148.00 hid­den between crates of toma­toes.

The sus­pects, aged between 26 and 32 will appear in Sen­wabar­wana  Magistrate’s Court on June 18, 2020, fac­ing charges of Pos­ses­sion of illic­it cig­a­rettes and con­tra­ven­tion of Cus­toms and Exer­cise Act.

Brigadier Mojape­lo said inves­ti­ga­tions are con­tin­u­ing.
