Police arrested “tomatoes trucks drivers” related to cigarette smuggling sydicate

In yet another illegal cigarettes syndicate busts, acting on a tip-off from members of the community,  police had on Wednesday uncovered boxes full of illegal cigarettes hidden into two trucks that were allegedly “transporting” tomatoes.

Limpopo Provincial Police spokesperson Brigadier Motlafela Mojapelo said the police received information about two trucks transporting tomatoes from a local farm near Pontdrift border post to Rustenburg in the northwest also contains consignments of illegal cigarettes.

“A snap operation comprising  Alldays, Makhado police including Crime Intelligence Unit searched the area. Police found a vehicle on the R572 Swartwater road next to the Mogalakwena bridge that matched the description and ordered the driver to stop.” Brigadier Mojapelo.

Brigadier General Mohapelo said they then escorted the two drivers  to the Alldays Police Station, where they [police] found 30 boxes of Remington Gold and Pacific Blue Ray cigarettes, estimated at R403 148.00 hidden between crates of tomatoes.

The suspects, aged between 26 and 32 will appear in Senwabarwana  Magistrate’s Court on June 18, 2020, facing charges of Possession of illicit cigarettes and contravention of Customs and Exercise Act.

Brigadier Mojapelo said investigations are continuing.
