Police arrests suspects linked to cigarettes smuggling syndicates

Police operation in Limpopo have arrested suspects allegedly connected to an illegal cigarettes network.

Limpopo Police spokesperson, Brigadier Motlafela Mojapelo confirmed cops arrested the suspects aged between 19 and 60 at  roadblocks set up in Lephalale, Musina, Tshilwavhusikhu, Makhado and Tuinplaas.

“Police have confiscated an assortment of illicit brands including Remington Gold, Chelsea, Royal Express and Premium worth R 2 250 000.00,” said Brigadier Mojapelo.

In Mphephu alone, said Brigadier Mojapelo, police arrested three foreign nationals at Dzanani section aged 36 and 39 and illicit cigarettes worth about R700 000.00.

He said on Friday, June 12, 2020, police arrested  two suspects aged 26 and 30 after they spotted a blue Ford Fiesta along the R518 road between Lephalale and Marken.

“Upon searching the vehicle, police found a full load of illicit cigarettes.

Brigadier Mojapleo said some arrested suspects have already started appearing before their respective local magistrate courts, adding that police were continuing with investigations.

The Acting Provincial Police Commissioner Major General Jan Scheepers has commended the Police for their vigilance.

We urge police to turn the tight against the smuggling and trade in illicit cigarettes in the province, added Major General Scheepers.
