Police oper­a­tion in Limpopo have arrest­ed sus­pects alleged­ly con­nect­ed to an ille­gal cig­a­rettes net­work.

Limpopo Police spokesper­son, Brigadier Mot­lafela Mojape­lo con­firmed cops arrest­ed the sus­pects aged between 19 and 60 at  road­blocks set up in Lep­ha­lale, Musi­na, Tshilwavhusikhu, Makha­do and Tuin­plaas.

“Police have con­fis­cat­ed an assort­ment of illic­it brands includ­ing Rem­ing­ton Gold, Chelsea, Roy­al Express and Pre­mi­um worth R 2 250 000.00,” said Brigadier Mojape­lo.

In Mphe­p­hu alone, said Brigadier Mojape­lo, police arrest­ed three for­eign nation­als at Dzanani sec­tion aged 36 and 39 and illic­it cig­a­rettes worth about R700 000.00.

He said on Fri­day, June 12, 2020, police arrest­ed  two sus­pects aged 26 and 30 after they spot­ted a blue Ford Fies­ta along the R518 road between Lep­ha­lale and Marken.

“Upon search­ing the vehi­cle, police found a full load of illic­it cig­a­rettes.

Brigadier Mojapleo said some arrest­ed sus­pects have already start­ed appear­ing before their respec­tive local mag­is­trate courts, adding that police were con­tin­u­ing with inves­ti­ga­tions.

The Act­ing Provin­cial Police Com­mis­sion­er Major Gen­er­al Jan Scheep­ers has com­mend­ed the Police for their vig­i­lance.

We urge police to turn the tight against the smug­gling and trade in illic­it cig­a­rettes in the province, added Major Gen­er­al Scheep­ers.
