A manhunt is underway for suspects who allegedly shot randomly at local tavern and killed patrons in Nomzamo informal settlement, Orlando East in the wee hours of Sunday morning.
Gauteng police commissioner, Lieutenant General Elias Mawela has condemned the incident and called for the team of detectives led by Deputy Provincial Commissioner, Crime detection, Major General Mbusu Khumalo to pull all their resources to ensure that the perpetrators are arrested.
Police say a group of men with 9mm rifles and handguns stormed into a tavern just after midnight and started firing indiscriminately at the patrons who were drinking inside.
“Twenty-three people were shot, twelve of whom were declared dead at the scene, while eleven were rushed to a nearby hospital. Two more people died at the hospital,’ said a police spokesperson. Colonel Dimakatso Sello
Colonel Sello said police had opened 14 cases of murder, and nine of attempted murder.
