Priest, congregant drowns during church rituals in Mogol River

Police divers recovered  bodies of a priest and a female congregant who drowned in the Mogol River in Lephalale, Limpopo while performing church rituals.

A priest Titus Mosima, 36, of Abbortspoort village, and a female congregant Noko Suzen Chaba, 39, from Hlogo ya Nku village outside Steiloop disappeared beneath the surface apparently while performing religious rituals on Sunday.

Limpopo police spokesperson, Lieutenant colonel Mamphaswa Seabi confirmed the woman was rescued and taken to hospital but was pronounced dead upon arrival, while the body of the priest was retrieved at 11 am on Monday.

Provincial Police Commissioner Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe urges community members to be cautious around rivers and streams after a priest and female church member drowned at Mogol River on Sunday.

“Church congregants are encouraged to avoid rivers when performing rituals, especially if they don’t know how to swim,” said Lieutenant General Hadebe.
