Two suspects will appear in the Phalala Magistrate’s Court on Thursday, facing charges of smuggling illicit cigarettes, and violating medicine and related Substance Control Act.
Limpopo police spokesman Brigadier Motlafela Mojapelo confirmed cops arrested two suspects aged between 37 and 46 on Tuesday at the Groblersbridge border post in Lephalale.
He said the men were trying to smuggle into the country illegal cigarettes, including a batch of facial cream estimated at more than R2,6 million.
“The police intercepted two trucks trying to cross the border from Botswana into South Africa loaded with copper.
They transferred the trucks to the search area where they inspected the cargo. That was when they found a box of cream and cigarettes covered with a tarpaulin,” Brigadier Mojapelo said.
Brigadier Mojapelo said while searching the two trucks, police confiscated illicit 1 500 cartoons of Wish brand cigarettes including 32 400 tubes of Movite and Lemonvite creams, 120 000 Tablets of Super Apeti [Cyproheptadine] with a combined total value estimated at R2 661742.
Meanwhile, the two suspects arrested on Monday on July 20, 2020, while attempting to smuggle over six million worth of illicit cigarettes at Beitbridge Border Post appeared in the Musina Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday.
The court did not ask Johannes Chinyai (36) and his co-accused Sivelukuthula Ndlovu (44) to plead and postponed the case to 28 July 2020 for further police investigation.
