“Ramaphosa: GNU making progress despite differences – ‘We will not let SA down’

President Cyril Ramaphosa has expressed optimism about the Government of National Unity’s (GNU) progress, despite differences among its 10 constituent parties.

In his weekly newsletter, Ramaphosa reflected on the GNU’s three-month milestone, highlighting its commitment to respecting the Constitution, promoting accountability, and advancing good governance.

The GNU’s common minimum programme has guided ministers and deputy ministers from various parties in tackling South Africa’s challenges. Ramaphosa acknowledged that some ministers have faced an adjustment period but praised their collective efforts.

The President identified three strategic priorities for the 7th democratic administration: driving inclusive growth and job creation, reducing poverty, and building a capable and ethical state.

Ramaphosa acknowledged differences among GNU parties, citing the Basic Education Laws Amendment (BELA) Bill debate. However, he emphasized the importance of dialogue and finding common ground.

To facilitate engagement, Ramaphosa delayed implementing the BELA Act, allowing parties to discuss contentious clauses. This approach aims to foster openness and cooperation among GNU parties.

Ramaphosa expressed confidence in the GNU’s future, stating, “We cannot guarantee that parties will reach agreement on every difficult issue, but we must make every effort to find common ground.”

The President reassured South Africans that the GNU is committed to success, saying, “We will not let them down.”
