Ramaphosa’s inauguration set for Wednesday at Union Buildings

The government is getting ready for the Presidential inauguration, set to occur on Wednesday at the Union Buildings in Pretoria.

Cyril Ramaphosa was re-elected as the President of South Africa during the first sitting of the National Assembly of the seventh democratic administration at the Cape Town International Convention Centre on Friday.

After issuing and counting a total of 339 ballot papers, with 12 invalid ballots, Ramaphosa received 283 votes compared to the 44 votes received by Economic Freedom Fighters leader Julius Malema. 

According to Section 87 of the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa, the President must be sworn in within five days of their election by the National Assembly. 

Minister in the Presidency, Khumbudzo Ntshavheni, confirmed that the President must be inaugurated on Wednesday, June 19, 2024.

Ntshavheni highlighted the importance of the Presidential inauguration as part of South Africa’s 30 Years of Freedom celebration, bringing together a diverse group of South Africans to celebrate.
