SA bundles up: Snowfall, cold snap expected this weekend

South Africa braces for another winter wallop as the South Africa Weather Service sounds the alarm for a second snowfall event this weekend, following the recent chaos that crippled roads across Free State, KwaZulu-Natal, and Eastern Cape.”

The weather service predicts that a cold front, followed by an upper trough system, will bring significant cooling over the escarpment regions of South Africa.

Starting in the Western Cape on Sunday morning, the snowfall is expected to spread eastward towards KwaZulu-Natal by Monday. According to SA Weather Service, daytime temperatures will begin to cool down on Sunday, with the coldest conditions expected on Monday. Strong winds and ocean swells are also predicted along the south coast during this time.

While daily rainfall accumulation is not expected to exceed 30 mm, residents in the Western Cape, southern Northern Cape, Eastern Cape, and southern KwaZulu-Natal should prepare for potential snowfall and very cold temperatures. The weather service advises staying indoors and taking precautions to stay warm and safe during this unexpected winter weather event.

Numerical Weather Prediction models currently indicate that accumulated snowfall depth is not expected to be significant, this forecast may change closer to the time of the event. However, this forecast may change closer to the time of the event.

At this stage, the South African Weather Service does not expect the N3 including van Reenen’s Pass to be significantly affected this weekend.

As South Africa braces for more snowfall, residents are urged to stay updated on weather alerts and take necessary precautions to stay safe during this unusual weather event.
