Last updated on 2022-10-27

The Presidency said last night that the South African government noted the terror alert issued by the US Embassy about a planned attack this coming weekend in Sandton, Johannesburg.

Vincent Magwenya, spokesperson for the presidency, said the alert is a standard communication from the government to its citizens.

According to a statement issued on Wednesday, the US Embassy in South Africa reported that it had received information that terrorists may be planning an attack on Saturday targeting large gatherings of people in Sandton, Johannesburg.

There is no further information regarding the timing, method, or target of the potential attack, according to the Embassy.

“The U.S. Embassy advises staff to avoid crowds and large public gatherings in Sandton during the weekend,” it said.

Magwenya said South African security forces must ensure that everyone feels safe in the country.

He said law enforcement agencies continue to monitor threats ‘to our citizens, our nation, and our sovereignty.’

He said should any the need arise,, the South African government will be the first to inform the public of any imminent threat.
