SA recorded 5,486 new coronavirus cases

The National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD) recorded 5,486 new confirmed cases of COVID-19 on Sunday, bringing the total number of cases to 3 841,388.

This increase represents a 25.3 percent positivity rate.

The institute is a part of the National Health Laboratory Services, which provides laboratory-based surveillance to help inform the public health response to COVID-19 in SA.

On Sunday, the NDoH reported 7 deaths, of which 5 occurred in the past 48 hours.

So far, there are 100,523 confirmed fatalities due to COVID-19 related deseases.

A total of 24,675,963 tests have been conducted in the public and private sectors.

Gauteng recorded most cases of COVID-19, accounting for 40 percent of the total number of cases, followed by Kwa­Zulu-Natal, which accounted for 26 percent.

Western Cape accounted for 16 percent, Free State accounted 4 percent, Eastern Cape and Northern Cape each accounted 3 percent, Mpumalanga and North West each accounted 2 percent, and Limpopo accounted for 1 percent.
