SA reported 1,980 new COVID-19 cases

The National Institute of Communicable Diseases (NICD) reported 1,980 new COVID-19 cases identified in South Africa, bringing the total number of laboratory confirmed cases to 3,698,803.

This increase represents a 6.2% positivity rate.

The National Department Health (NDoH) recorded 40 deaths, confirming that 3 occurred in the last 24-48 hours.

The total number of deaths has so far increased to 99,767.

Currently, the total death toll stands at 99,767.

But due to the ongoing audit exercise, the NDOH warns that there may be a backlog of reported COVID-19 mortality cases.

Majority of the new cases comes from Gauteng, accounting for 39 percent, followed by the Western Cape with 25 percent. Kwa-Zulu Natal accounted for 16 percent; Mpumalanga 5 percent, Eastern Cape, Free State and North West each accounted for 4 percent, Limpopo 2 percent and Northern Cape 1 percent.
