The Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) in KwaZulu-Natal is calling for shack dwellers to use the 2024 General Election to punish the ANC, citing the ruling party’s neglect and failure to provide vulnerable communities with adequate support.
Recently, devastating shack fires in Kennedy Road, Durban, Dakota, and Bottlebrush informal settlements have demonstrated the ANC’s inability to provide citizens with decent housing.
The IFP provincial spokesperson for Human Settlements, S. Bhanprakash, expressed disappointment, noting that people are “lied to and used as election fodder for ANC politicians”.
He encouraged shack dwellers to use their voting power to express their pain and frustration, stating,
“If they don’t punish the ANC, they will continue to suffer for many years to come.”
The IFP calls on KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Human Settlements, Sipho Nkosi, to update the public on when Kennedy Road shack dwellers will be provided with adequate housing.
To ensure accountability, Bhanprakash said the IFP plans to closely monitor the situation.
