In a shocking turn of events at the Vereeniging Magistrates’ Court, a court interpreter has found herself on the wrong side of the law.
Elizabeth Nyakai Kazembe, a Zimbabwean national and trusted member of the court’s staff, appeared in the very court where she works to face charges of theft and fraud.
The allegations against Kazembe stem from a case involving Godfrey Mwashita, who was facing charges of being in the country illegally.
It is reported that on September 6, 2023, Kazembe contacted Mwashita’s family and demanded a payment of R2000 in exchange for his release from custody on the same day.
However, after the payment was made, Mwashita was not released as promised. The family grew suspicious and reported the matter to the prosecutor at the court. A case was swiftly opened against Kazembe the following day, and she was summoned to appear in court to answer for her actions.
During her court appearance, Kazembe was released on warning and the matter was remanded to October 28, 2024 for further investigation. National Prosecuting Authority Pretoria Gauteng Division Spokesperson, Lumka Mahanjana, condemned Kazembe’s alleged actions, stating that they undermine the integrity of the judicial system.
It is a sobering reminder that no one is above the law, regardless of their position or reputation. The wheels of justice are turning, and Kazembe will have to face the consequences of her alleged misconduct. Stay tuned for updates on this developing story.
