Shoprite gives away R1.4m in prizes to SMMEs

Shoprite, one of the leading retail stores, once again focusing on small businesses through the 2020 Hustle Competition.

The competition will award 20 established small business owners with prizes valued at R1.4 million.

Each winner will receive R50,000 in cash and short courses worth R20,000 provided by Get Smarter.

Shoprite launched the competition in 2018 and provided a launch pad for previous winners, including a competitor that has become a national supplier of Shoprite and Checkers.

Shoprite recognises the key role that SMME (Small, Medium and Micro Enterprises) plays in South Africa’s economic growth and creating much-needed jobs.

According to Shoprite, the Hustle Competition aims to celebrate and support small businesses with potential to help them develop further.

“We can even bring it into Shoprite’s consumer market, such as Toys with Roots. The three-year-old company took part in the 2018 Hustle competition to expand the visibility of its African doll series-and eventually became one of the first winners,” said Shoprite.

Besides the much-needed cash injection which promotes the development of young businesses, said Shoprite the company’s [Toys with Roots] Rainbow Kids dolls are now available in Shoprite and Checkers supermarkets across the country.

This year Shoprite is looking for 20 new entrepreneurs to participants in the Hustle Competition.

Entrants must be at least 18 years old and a South African citizen or permanent resident.

Entries must be submitted online between August 3 and September 4, 2020.

Winners will be announced from September 14 to October 31, 2020.

Shoprite Checkers (Pty) Ltd (“the Promoter”) is conducting this promotional competition

The promotional competition is open to all South African residents who are 18 years or older and are in possession of a valid identity document, passport or document of proof of South African residency. Any director, member, partner, employee, agent or consultant of the Promoter, the marketing service providers or any person who directly or indirectly controls or is controlled by these entities, including their spouses, life partners, business partners or immediate family members may not enter or participate in this promotional competition and will automatically be disqualified upon entry.

The promotional competition is open for entries from August 3, 2020  and ends at 12a.m. (midnight) on September 4,  2020. Any entries received after September 4, 2020, will not be considered, as winners will need to be vetted.

How to Enter

To enter, participants are required to complete and submit the entry form which can be located at, subject thereto that the participant complies with the entry criteria as listed below.

Entry Criteria

  • A maximum of 1 (One) entry is allowed per business.
  • Participants must be 18 years or older and must be a South African citizen or permanent resident (required to attach certified copy of ID or passport);
  • The business must have been in operation for a period of at least 6  months

(required to complete a company profile summary using the entry template provided and 4 photographs of its business operations); and

  • Must have a valid bank South African bank account (required to attach confirmation letter from the relevant bank)
