South Africa condemns escalating extrajudicial killings in the Middle East

The South African government has expressed deep concern over the escalating extrajudicial killings in the Middle East, particularly the recent assassination of Hassan Nasrallah and other leaders in Lebanon.

 This follows a series of indiscriminate attacks on civilians, resulting in numerous fatalities, hundreds critically injured, and thousands more harmed.

The scale of injuries caused by these explosions is deeply troubling and warrants strong international condemnation.

According to the Department of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO), these attacks constitute a grave violation of international human rights and humanitarian law.

The South African Government extends its heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims and wishes the injured a swift recovery.

The government stands in solidarity with Lebanon during this challenging time and expresses support in the aftermath of these ongoing attacks.

DIRCO emphasizes that these actions exacerbate the already tense situation in the Middle East, undermining international peace efforts.

South Africa condemns these targeted assassinations and the recent bombing campaign against Lebanon, which has claimed over 720 lives since Monday. The United Nations reports that the number of displaced individuals from southern Lebanon has more than doubled, with over 211,000 people now displaced, and at least 20 primary healthcare centers forced to shut down.

Key concerns include escalating attacks on civilians, violation of human rights and humanitarian law, and the growing humanitarian crisis in the region. I

In response, South Africa calls for an immediate ceasefire, adherence to international law, an international and transparent investigation into the perpetrators, and support for Lebanon and affected communities.

By condemning these atrocities and advocating for a ceasefire, South Africa reaffirms its commitment to regional peace and stability.

The international community must come together to address these ongoing attacks and work towards a peaceful resolution in the Middle
