The 39-year-old armed security guard wanted for the murder of his colleague was arrested on Tuesday at Onverwacht suburb in Lephalale.
During the arrest, police confiscated two illegal firearms and 15 live ammunition.
The arrest is a sequel to the murder of 40-year-old security guard Matshembe Maphambanyene on March 19, 2021.
Limpopo police spokesman Brigadier Motlafela Mojapelo said police preliminary investigations had revealed that the guns belonged to the company where both the deceased and suspect were employed, adding that one of them could have been used to commit the murder.
“The victim and the suspect were on night duty at the Tomburke weighbridge along the N11 road near the Groblersbrug border post when the incident occurred. The next morning, when other security guards came to report for work to relief the pair, they were shocked to find the corpse of one of their colleagues lying in the guard room. His service pistol was missing and his colleague was nowhere to be found,” Brigadier Mojapelo said.
Brigadier Mojapelo said the police investigation led to the arrest on Tuesday, of an armed suspect in connection with the murder of Maphambanyene whose body was found shot and killed in the guard room.
Acting Provincial Commissioner, Major General Samuel Manala applauded the suspect’s prompt arrest.
The suspect is expected to appear before the Phalala Magistrates’ Court on charges of murder, robbery and illegal possession of firearms and ammunition.
