The Limpopo Police have arrested 1538 suspects between the ages of 20 and 50 during weekly joint operations in various parts of the province.
Police spokesperson, Brigadier Motlafela Mojapelo, said the eight-day operation, completed on August 9, was conducted through roadblocks, stop-and-searches, and tracing of wanted suspects.
Mojapelo said the arrested 1538 suspects include those who were found in possession of unlawful firearms and ammunition, and in possession of drugs and illicit cigarettes.
According to Mojapelo, other suspects were arrested in various parts of the province for assault, murder, robbery, and in possession of suspected stolen goods.
He said police in Groblersbrug – Botswana Border post near Ga-Seleka in Lephalale apprehended a truck driver for the smuggling illicit cigarettes and medicaments.
“Police seized 350 x cartons of Pacific Blue illicit cigarettes, worth R93 426.00, 7500 x packets of Power Apetite tablets, worth R150 000.00, and four Volvo trucks with trailers, valued at R1.2 million,” Mojapelo said.
A 41-year-old suspect was arrested for possessing an AK47 rifle with 10 live rounds at Vaalwater, near Lephalale.
A joint operation led by the Modimolle Crime Intelligence Unit, K9 Unit, Public Order Policing and Endangered Species Unit, along with OSV and stakeholders, led to the arrest of the suspect.
Mojapapelo said police arrested a foreign national who had a pangolin on his farm in Lephalale.
As part of the operation, Mojapelo said 199 people were arrested for breaking the Disaster Management Act.
