UIF extend relief payments for workers affected by COVID-19 pandemic

Minister of Employment and Labour, Thulas Nxesi said the Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF) has  extended applications  for workers affected by COVID-19 pandemic for the March 2020 to end July 2020 period until September, 15, 2020.

Minister Nxesi stated that receipt of Covid-19 TERS benefit applications will close on October, 30,  2020, saying the UIF will not accept further applications beyond that date.

“This follows negotiations at the National Economic and Labour Council (NEDLAC), signed by Minister Thulas Nxesi.

To date, said Nxesi, the UIF has disbursed over R41-billion in 9 501 365 payments through applications by 825 814 employers.

“With the lockdown for some industries extended to September 15, it only makes sense for us to continue to shield workers from the worst effects of the pandemic by extending the relief payments which have placed much needed cash into the hands of ordinary workers,” said Minister Nxesi

Minister Nxesi said the Covid-19 TERS benefit payments are part of government-wide response to ease the burden of the pandemic and to make sure that, to the extent possible, lockdown doesn’t prejudice workers.

He said employers sent in applications and workers get their money either in the bank accounts or through their employers.
