Volvo Cars launches new all-electric Volvo C40 Recharge in SA

The first fully electric car, the Volvo XC40 Recharge Pure Electric, will be unveiled in South Africa later this year.

Volvo Cars South Africa Managing Director, Greg Maruszewski said the exact timing will be communicated shortly.

“While launch plans for the Volvo C40 Recharge in the South African market have yet to be finalized, I’m pleased to announce that we will bring the XC40 Recharge, our first fully electric to this country this year. It is a very important step in our plans,” said Maruszewski.

Volvo said it plans that by 2030, every car it sells will be pure electric.

By 2025, Volvo aims to have 50 percent of its global sales made up of fully electric cars, with the remainder being hybrids. By 2030, it plans every car it sells to be fully electric.

“It is fully electric. It is offered online only with a convenient care package and will be available for quick delivery. Having a new Volvo has never been this attractive. The C40 Recharge represents the future of Volvo and shows where we are going,” said Henrik Green, the chief technology officer at Volvo.

The automaker said the future of Volvo cars will be electric and that the new Volvo C40 Recharge is the latest evidence of its commitment to a zero-emissions future.

“The C40 Recharge has all the benefits of SUV but is less and more elegant. It is based on the modular engineering compact vehicle platform (CMA) and the first Volvo model in history to be designed as pure electric-only.”

CMA is a one-piece global midsize car platform jointly developed by Volvo and Geely under the framework of China Euro Vehicle Technology AB.

The rear of the C40 Recharge features a striking rear design that matches the lower roofline, while the new front design introduces a fresh face to electric Volvo cars and includes headlamps with the latest pixel technology.

Inside, the C40 Recharge provides customers with the high seating position that most Volvo drivers prefer, while it is available with a range of colour and decor options that are unique to the model.

It’s also Volvo’s first model completely devoid of leather.

Similar to XC40 Recharge, the C40 Recharge comes with one of the best infotainment systems on the market, developed jointly with Google and based on the Android operating system.

It provides consumers with integrated Google applications and services, such as Google Maps, Google Assistant, and the Google Play Store.

Unlimited data enables superior connectivity and the C40 Recharge will receive over-the-air software updates.

That means it will continue to improve over time once it has left the factory.

The drive consists of two twin electric motors, one front and the other on the rear axle, powered by a 78-kWh battery that can charge up to 80 percent speed in about 40 minutes.

It offers an expected range of about 420 km and is expected to improve over time with software updates over the air.
