The first council meeting for Modimolle-Mookgppong Local Municipality in Limpopo collapsed on Friday, allegedly when the ANC did not show up to elect the new mayor, speaker, and chief whip.
Democratic Alliance (DA), Head of Political Constituency, Desiree van der Walt, said the meeting was halted because her party and Freedom Front Plus councillors were unable to convene a quorum.
In the wake of poor local government election results without an absolute winner, the municipality was declared a hung counci.
The ANC won 14 seats, but left with 4 after the DA occupied 7 seats and Freedom Front Plus took 3 seats.
The Economic Freedom Fighters lost 2 seats.
Van der Walt has expressed disappointment that the ANC staged a non-show and condemned the party’s actions as unconscionable in its attempt to disrupt the lawful meeting to elect the mayor, speaker and chief whip.
“The absence of ANC councillors, which resulted in the council failing to form quorum is intolerable. They acknowledged and approved the election results after the local elections on November 1, 2021, “DA stated.
However, despite apparent infighting over positions, Van der Walt said the reason provided by the ANC was that their National Executive Committee (NEC) has not yet mandated the appointments.
According to Van der Walt, ANCclaimed the NEC would meet this weekend to confirm mayors, speakers and other appointments.
